5 TIPS FOR MOVING DAY

Contracts have been exchanged, so it’s now all about the big day! But don’t get caught out by not preparing for what is one of the most stressful days of your life. Take a look at our top 5 tips for moving day to help make it as easy as possible.

5 tips to ease the stress of moving day

  1. Make a list: No one likes stress, and what better way to help avoid it than to make a list. Note down everything you have to do, and consider your timeline. Don’t wait until the week before your move to start preparing.
  2. DIY or removal firm? It can be done yourself, but it takes a lot of energy, organisation and a ready supply of strong people, and remember – driving the necessary high-top, tail-lift hire van is not for the faint-hearted! Removal costs for an average property are around £1,000, and professional packing can cost at least another £300. Most people explore the cheaper DIY option, but there is a lot to be said to putting you feet up and watching the experts crack on.
  3. Declutter: Clear your home of any unwanted, unnecessary or old items before you move to save you time and stress, as well as money! By donating, recycling or throwing away things you don’t need, you’re cutting down on the amount of stuff you need to move. The less stuff you have, the smaller the van and the fewer hours it will take.
  4. Organise utilities: Many people forget to take final meter readings, but it makes everything so much easier. An easy way is to just take photos on your phone for later use. Register with utility providers in advance if possible, and don’t forget electric, gas and water. If you are moving to a new provider in your new home it will be worth calling them to let them know that the house has been sold and that account is closed – don’t rely on the seller! Finally, remember to add/update yourself on the electoral register and update any relevant UK recognised ID, such as your driving licence.
  5. Moving day survival kit: We’re not saying you need a Bear Grylls style kit, but before moving day make sure you have packed a bag of essentials – something that contains the necessary items that will get you (and your family) through the first 24 hours unscathed. Think about toiletries, food and drink, ID, valuables, and of course the all important phone and gadget chargers.
